FSU Miami
They're Back!
Wouldn't it be great to see this as the cover story for ESPN. I sure do. With the help of Miami, We can make it happen.

Entering Week 2, there are a number of things FSU would like to see happen.  Unfortunately, in the BCS system, beginning the season ranked 20th does not guarantee you a shot in the National Championship if you win all your games.  We need teams ahead of us to lose and our future opponents to win.  Due to the political nature of "the polls" you also need headlines to get in the minds of the pollsters.  Lets take a look at what we need in week 2.

NEED) UPSET OKLAHOMA

It should go without saying but we're gonna say it anway.  FSU has to beat Oklahoma.  Fortunate for us, Oklahoma looks like the 8-5 team it was last year and not the 7th ranked team its suppose to be this year.  Utah State was able to move the ball with ease and I expect Christian Ponder and the Seminoles to do the same.  Lets just be happy the Noles are the team that get to benefit from thier preseason mis-ranking.

NEED) MIAMI BEATS OHIO STATE

This would be the second greatest thing that can happen in week 2.  FSU would love for Miami to pull the upset.  A win here would rocket Miami into the top 10.  Following that, they would only need to survive Pitt and Clemson before we get to steal their thunder.  On the political side of things, every sports news outlet in America would headline article titles that sound something like "They're BACK!" putting us back in the minds of all pollsters and building suspense for the big showdown to occur 3 weeks from then.  Of course if Miami loses, we will jump them,  but its not nearly the boost it would have been if we took them down later.

NEED) GT & VT HOLD ON

Both teams face cupcakes this week so we shouldnt be too worried.  But these 2 teams are the only other ACC teams that are ranked.  We need this ranking to stay in the ACC.  The worst thing for any conference is to have its ranked teams beaten in out-of-conference matchups.  All it does is transfer power out of the conference.

WANT) PENN STATE FALL TO ALABAMA

Couple reasons this game is important.  FSU will jump the Nittany Lions in the USA Today Poll.  And with a little extra luck, BYU can make its way into the rankings in the AP Poll right as we play them.

WANT) GEORGIA & SOUTH CAROLINA PLAY EACHOTHER

This one is already in the books.  It happens this week and with this showdown some of our high unranked opponents or low ranked opponents, such as BYU will get a little boost from this game regardless of what happens.

WANT) AUBURN LOSES TO MISSISSIPPI STATE

I wasn't even going to mention this game but seeing as the spread is only 2 points the upset seems possible.  Auburn losing will have the same effect as the Georgia vs South Carolina game.  Auburn falls out of the rankings making room for BYU and our other bubble ACC teams.

???) FLORIDA FENDS OFF USF

Never would I suggest we rout for the Gators, but we really won't benefit from the Bulls winning here. Yes, we will jump the Gators in the polls for the first time in about 5 years but that doesn't necessarily have to come from a South Florida upset.  Tennessee is just as likely to pull it next week.  The real effect of this upset would be a stolen spotlight.  The only news that would overshadow the return of FSU and Miami is USF taking down Florida's percieved power team.  But don't fret FSU.  If you can't support the gators even when it suits us, it really doesn't matter that much.  Personally, I'm gonna pull for the little guy here and accept sharing the frontpage with them.  Givin' Florida's performance against the Redhawks, ths could be quite a show.

All of these hypotheticals rely on FSU beating OKLA.  Its gonna happen, but its still a "WHAT IF" article

I've enjoyed enough BCS bids, its all or nothing for the Big Time (or once Big Time) programs. For me, and I assume many, there's no difference in a January or December Bowl unless that January Bowl is on the 7th.

I appreciate putting your own teams politics to the side to root for the Bulls. I feel confident the Noles are going to take Oklahoma relatively easily. My predicted score 34 - 13. Oklahoma always gets mad respect in the polls, but this year, waaay overrated. But the main concern with each team--winning your conference. You win your conference, you get an automatic BCS bid.
